What is Semsur?

In the Byzantine era, Adıyaman was called as “Perres” (in Greek) or “Pordonnium” (Latin). The Assyrians was called Adıyaman as “Klevdiye”. Adıyaman was captured by the Arabs in M. 757 under the management of the Caliph El-Mansur and has been called as “Hısn-ı Mansur” for Mansur. Thereafter, it was called as “Hısn-ı Mansur” to the Ottomans in other words “Castle of Mansur”. In the Middle Ages, sometimes this name was called as “Hişn-Mansur”. The name of the city was called as this name or wrongly written “hüsn-ı Mansur” name in either Islam or Armenian and Assyrian sources until it is called as Adıyaman. It was called as “Semsur” in Kurdish language. According to another rumor, a pagan ruler had seven sons who believed in the true religion in Adıyaman. This seven young sons was murdered because they don’t believe their father’s religion. Therefore, it is called as the name Adıyaman come from “Seven Braves”. The grave of this seven brothers are at the south of Adıyaman.
